Finding preceptors around Athens and Southeast Ohio
Athens County sits in Appalachian Ohio, with a handful of hospitals, a large federally qualified health center network and several Ohio University health programs close by. These are the places an NP student near Athens is likely to consider. Below is what each one publishes, what the shortage data says about the region, and how we search it for you.

The region in numbers
Athens County is one of Ohio's 32 Appalachian counties. The Appalachian Regional Commission rates its economy At-Risk for both FY2026 and FY2027, with three distressed census tracts, while Adams, Meigs and Scioto are Ohio's distressed counties for FY2027. The county had 63,218 residents in the July 2024 Census estimate, and the USDA classes it as nonmetro with an urban population of 20,000 or more, adjacent to a metro area.
Ohio University says it plainly in its own news coverage: many rural areas like Southeast Ohio are considered medically underserved, and the nursing program uses simulation to add hands-on experience that can be harder to reach in rural Ohio. For a practicum search, that means planning around a short list of hospitals and a wide spread of community clinics.
Shortage designations around Athens
HRSA designates Athens County as a low-income population shortage area for primary care (LI-Athens County, rural, score 16) and for mental health (LI-MHCA 33, rural, score 19). Both cover the county's low-income population rather than the whole county, and the older geographic mental health designation has been withdrawn. Hopewell Health Centers holds facility designations for primary care and mental health, and Hocking, Meigs, Vinton and Perry counties carry low-income primary care designations as well.
A designation measures patient need. Whether a given clinic has room for a student is a separate question only the clinic can answer, which is why a Southeast Ohio search is mostly a series of direct conversations with clinicians and practice managers.

Hopewell Health Centers and other community clinics
Hopewell Health Centers, headquartered in Chillicothe, is a federally qualified health center with 46 active Ohio sites in HRSA's data. Fourteen are in Athens County, and they are the county's only FQHC sites: Athens, Nelsonville, Coolville, The Plains, Glouster and Stewart, school-based locations included. Hopewell also runs sites in Washington (7), Jackson (5), Gallia, Hocking and Meigs (4 each), Ross and Vinton (3 each), and Franklin and Perry (1 each).
Neighboring counties add Muskingum Valley Health Centers in Morgan County, OVP Health Care in Gallia, the Community Action Committee of Pike County in Jackson, and a Wirt County Health Service Association site in Meigs. No NP student process was found for any of these organizations, so each is a direct ask. For FNP students they match the community clinic settings in Ohio University's MSN FAQ, and for PMHNP students the school-based sites fit the same FAQ's list.
Behavioral health settings for PMHNP students
Athens has several behavioral health providers within one small city. Hopewell holds a mental health facility shortage designation. Integrated Services for Behavioral Health lists an Athens County Office and Charles Place, both in Athens. Appalachian Behavioral Healthcare gives inpatient care to acutely mentally ill adults from southeastern Ohio, and Ohio University's local resource list also names Health Recovery Services.
Together these cover the settings Ohio University names for PMHNP clinicals: community mental health agencies, school-based health centers and substance-abuse treatment facilities. Ohio University's own health programs in Athens
Several programs carry Ohio University's name. The Heritage Community Clinic, part of the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine's community health programs, provides primary care to qualifying adults aged 18 to 64 in southeast Ohio counties and is staffed by a certified nurse practitioner and a registered nurse. The college's Mobile Health Clinic has run since 1994 with two 40-foot units serving 24 Ohio counties, plus a mini unit added in April 2024. OhioHealth Campus Care is the student health center in Hudson Health Center.
Ohio University also describes an academic health department partnership with the Athens City-County Health Department that includes internship and practicum coordination, and it co-leads Health Workforce Ohio, a rural health workforce initiative it reported on in September 2026. Whether any of these programs hosts NP students is not published, so raise them with your faculty rather than treating them as open placements.

Does OhioHealth O'Bleness Hospital take NP students?
OhioHealth runs one APP Student Rotation Application for all its facilities, O'Bleness included, and no O'Bleness-only NP process was found. The system's FAQ lists a badge pickup point for the O'Bleness and Athens area, says it is not initiating new affiliation agreements, and requires a new application each semester. Ohio University's Important Dates page lists OhioHealth deadlines.
Is Athens County a health professional shortage area?
Yes, for its low-income population. HRSA designates Athens County as a low-income population shortage area for both primary care and mental health, each marked rural. Neither is a whole-county geographic designation; the older geographic mental health designation was withdrawn. Hopewell Health Centers also holds facility designations in both categories.
Can I do clinicals at the Heritage Community Clinic?
The clinic belongs to the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and is staffed by a certified nurse practitioner and a registered nurse, but its pages say nothing about hosting NP students. Ask your Ohio University faculty or the School of Nursing at graduatenursing@ohio.edu before you approach it, and keep a second site in view.
Is Athens County part of Appalachia?
Yes. The Appalachian Regional Commission counts 32 of Ohio's 88 counties in the Appalachian Region, and Athens County is one of them. ARC rates it At-Risk for FY2026 and FY2027, using unemployment, per capita market income and poverty rates. Buckeye Hills Regional Council is the local development district for Athens and seven other southeast Ohio counties.
Which hospital near Athens asks students to bring their own preceptor?
Adena Health, whose Regional Medical Center is in Chillicothe, says it requires all students to secure their own preceptor before submitting an application through its onboarding portal. Its page never names NP students specifically and publishes no deadlines or agreement terms, so confirm the fit with Ohio University faculty first. The Ohio NP preceptors page compares other systems.
