What changes when you cross a state line
Three things follow you. Ohio University requires graduate applicants to live in, and hold an unencumbered RN license from, one of its approved states. The state your clinical site sits in sets the RN license you must hold on shift and whether the Nurse Licensure Compact covers you. And the state's own rules, from collaboration requirements to hospital affiliation agreements, shape who can precept you.

Which states does Ohio University accept for its online MSN?
As of September 2026 the MSN application page lists 28 approved states for residence and RN licensure, including Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan, Florida and Texas. The full list is in the approved states guide.
Can my Ohio University clinicals be outside my home state?
Your clinicals happen close to home with a faculty-approved preceptor, and the RN license you hold has to cover the state your site is in. Read the guide to clinicals outside Ohio before you settle on a preceptor over the border.
Is the RN-to-BSN available in more states?
