Idaho and Ohio University: absent from every list

As of September 2026, Idaho appears on none of the state lists Ohio University publishes for nursing: not the graduate application list, and not any of the four RN-to-BSN versions. Seven Ohio University lists, no Idaho

Graduate admission requires residence in, and an unrestricted RN license from, an approved state. The RN-to-BSN runs on its own lists, which disagree with one another but agree on leaving Idaho out.

For scale, the programs behind those lists run 750 clinical hours in each MSN NP track and NP certificate, 450 or 500 in the Emergency NP certificate, 1,000 in the MSN-to-DNP, 500 for Nurse Leader and Nurse Educator, and 31.5 in the RN-to-BSN. How Idaho treats nursing programs based elsewhere

Idaho's program-approval rules are written for nursing programs offered inside the state, and neither the administrative rules nor the statute contains a clause aimed at clinicals run by a school from somewhere else. The Board of Nursing, housed in Idaho's occupational licensing division (DOPL), asks such schools to email it about requirements at hp-licensing@dopl.idaho.gov.

Once a student is on site, two provisions apply. One Board rule allows an RN who can lawfully practice in Idaho, by Idaho license or compact privilege, and who is matriculated in a nationally accredited APRN program, to carry out APRN functions built into the curriculum. Separately, a Board education policy from April 2024 says a preceptor in any nursing program must be licensed no lower than the level the student is working toward. The same policy asks nursing faculty for an Idaho RN license and adds an Idaho APRN license for whoever leads the APRN role and population courses.

Practice, licensing and Idaho's health systems

AANP files Idaho under full practice. Compact status: in effect for Idaho since January 19, 2018, while the APRN Compact is not enacted. No state preceptor incentive is on record.

Census estimates for 2025 put about 864,000 people in the Boise City metro, with the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls and Twin Falls metros much smaller. Idaho's larger systems include St. Luke's, Saint Alphonsus and Coeur d'Alene's Kootenai Health. They show the terrain; no link to Ohio University students is known.

Weighing a move to Montana or Nevada

Two of Idaho's neighbors sit on Ohio University's graduate list. Montana is a compact state; Ohio University's disclosure notes that program faculty giving direct patient care in Montana must hold both a Montana APRN license and a Montana or multistate RN license. Nevada has not joined the compact, which makes a Nevada RN license the first errand after relocating. Admission is judged on your residence when you apply, and the RN license page covers the license side.

Questions Ohio University students ask

Can Idaho nurses enroll in any Ohio University nursing program?

Not according to the lists Ohio University published as of September 2026. Idaho is missing from the 28-state graduate application list and from all four RN-to-BSN lists, and the MSN licensure disclosure marks it "No". Since the RN-to-BSN eligibility page says more states may be added, check with Ohio University before ruling it out.

I'm an Ohio University student moving to Boise. What comes first?

A conversation with the School of Nursing at graduatenursing@ohio.edu, before the move. Graduate admission rests on residence in an approved state, and Ohio University has not published how it handles a mid-program move to a state off the list. RN-to-BSN students have a written warning that such a move can end their eligibility to continue.

Must Ohio University get Idaho's approval before clinicals there?

Idaho's written rules contain no step for that. The Board asks schools located elsewhere to email hp-licensing@dopl.idaho.gov about requirements, which makes it a program-level question for Ohio University. Whatever the answer, the Board's 2024 policy sets the preceptor's license floor at the level the student is training for.

Would my Idaho multistate license cover clinicals in Montana?

Montana is a compact member, so an Idaho-issued multistate license covers RN practice there, subject to any site requirements. Nevada is different: it has stayed out of the compact, so clinicals there call for a Nevada license. Montana also sets a licensing rule for program faculty in direct patient care, which Ohio University handles on its side.
