Typhon for Ohio University graduate nursing students

Typhon is the one clinical system Ohio University names on its public nursing pages: graduate students use it to upload the documents the School of Nursing asks for, both for program and track requirements and for clinical placements. How it handles hours, case logs and evaluations in your practicum is set by your syllabus and faculty, not by any public page. This guide keeps the two apart.

What Ohio University says Typhon is for

The Graduate Nursing Knowledge Center gives Typhon a single sentence: "Typhon is a program which graduate students will use to upload documents as instructed by the School of Nursing for program/track requirements and/or clinical placements." Three phrases in it do most of the work.

"Graduate students." The line sits in the graduate center. RN-to-BSN students handle clinical paperwork in a Pre-Clinical Canvas course instead.
"As instructed." Typhon holds what the School of Nursing tells you to upload, when it tells you. The instruction sets the requirement, not the software.
"Requirements and/or clinical placements." It covers standing program or track requirements as well as documents tied to one particular placement.

Canvas is a separate tool. Ohio University calls it "the learning management system for Ohio University online courses," and your practicum course, syllabus and grades live there. The Canvas and student systems page covers the rest of the toolkit.

Typhon and the clinical packet

Ohio University does not state publicly that the clinical packet goes through Typhon. The Knowledge Center's sentence makes it the likely home for placement documents, and a search-engine summary of the now-restricted forms page described packets available "in Typhon under documents," but that summary could not be checked against the page itself.

Let your course instructions decide. If they point to Typhon, upload there; if they name another route, use that. The clinical packet guide explains the packet, the clinical overview sheets and the preceptor packet, and how to request each.

One more archived detail: the 2024 copy of the graduate forms page listed "Typhon Consent Forms." Later copies from 2025 and 2026 no longer show them; check with the School of Nursing whether anything similar applies to your cohort.

Hours, case logs and evaluations

No public Ohio University page says Typhon is where clinical hours or patient encounters are logged, or where preceptors and students complete evaluations. Many NP programs do use it for case logs, so it would be no surprise, but at Ohio University your practicum syllabus is the authority on what is logged, where and how often.

The public pages do make clear that there will be plenty to document. The FNP FAQ tells students to budget time to "document clinical encounters," each NP practicum carries a catalog load of "3.5 lecture, 5.0 clinical," and the MSN FAQ expects "2-3 days at your clinical site" during clinical courses.

Evaluations and faculty site visits are not described publicly either. The MSN FAQ says only that NP clinicals run "with an approved preceptor and an assigned clinical supervisor," and the archived forms page listed a "Graduate Clinical Hour Completion/Extension" form. The clinical supervisor page covers that faculty role.

Habits that keep Typhon from becoming a problem

Whatever your course asks Typhon to hold, a few habits head off the trouble that tends to surface at the end of a term.

Upload each requirement the day it is ready, and put its expiration date in your own calendar too.
Name files the way the School of Nursing asks, so faculty open the right version on the first try.
Use the preceptor's and site's names in exactly the form faculty approved; a mismatch invites questions at sign-off.
If your course logs encounters, enter them within a day of each clinical shift, while the details are fresh.
Save a screenshot or confirmation of anything submitted against a deadline.
Ask faculty in the first week what they review in Typhon, and when.

Typhon costs and setup

The DNP FAQ tells students to "expect additional costs for textbooks and use of Typhon." That mention sits on the DNP pages, so if you are in an MSN or certificate track, ask graduatenursing@ohio.edu whether a Typhon cost applies to your program and when it is charged.

Ohio University's public pages do not describe how or when your Typhon account is created. Your orientation materials and the School of Nursing are the places to ask. If you have used Typhon at another school, the screens will look familiar, but Ohio University's instructions decide what you upload here.

MSN-to-DNP applicants have an extra documentation task. The DNP apply page asks them to "provide documentation of any precepted practicum/clinical hours earned through a graduate nursing program," which feeds the gaps analysis of prior hours. Do Ohio University RN-to-BSN students use Typhon?

Ohio University's Typhon sentence refers to graduate students. RN-to-BSN clinical paperwork runs through a Pre-Clinical Canvas course, where students upload the Preceptor Agreement, and the first-week uploads in each clinical course include license verification through NURSYS. Is Typhon where I log my 750 clinical hours?

Possibly, but no public Ohio University page says so. The School of Nursing describes Typhon as an upload tool for requirements and placements, and how practicum hours are recorded and signed off is set in each course. Read your syllabus in the first week and ask faculty if the logging method is unclear.

Does Typhon cost extra at Ohio University?

For the DNP, yes: the DNP FAQ lists Typhon use among additional costs students should expect, next to textbooks. For the MSN tracks and certificates, the public pages are less direct, so ask graduatenursing@ohio.edu whether your program carries one and how it is billed, so it does not catch you out in your first clinical term.

What should I upload to Typhon before my first practicum?

Whatever the School of Nursing instructs, item by item. The pre-clinical requirements Ohio University lists for graduate students, covering health status and immunizations per the handbook, state and federal background checks, malpractice insurance and BLS, are likely candidates, since Typhon holds documents for program and track requirements. Does my preceptor need a Typhon account?

Ohio University's public pages do not say whether preceptors use Typhon or complete evaluations some other way. The preceptor packet, sent on request by the School of Nursing, and your course syllabus describe what your preceptor completes. Share both with your preceptor before your first clinical day so the expectations are clear from the start.
