Illinois residents and Ohio University's programs

No Ohio University page disputes Illinois. The application page, the graduate hub, the three graduate disclosure tables and every RN-to-BSN list include it, and it reached the graduate list in the 2019 expansion. Lists do get revised, so check the approved states again before you commit.

Two Illinois licenses: yours and your preceptor's

Ohio University's disclosure is blunt: "The APRN student and the preceptor in Illinois must have an Illinois RN license." Illinois is a compact holdout with no joining bill in the pipeline, so a multistate card from Indiana, Wisconsin or Missouri counts for nothing at an Illinois clinic.

State law does carve out an exception for out-of-state RNs, but only for those studying in graduate or RN-to-BSN completion programs located within Illinois. Ohio University is based in Ohio, hence the Illinois license. Illinois rules shape the preceptor's side too: faculty approve and orient anyone drawn from facility staff, that person must be on hand every time you care for patients, and their RN license must be current where you are practicing.

The costly slip: a Chicago-area student who lives on the Indiana side and plans an Illinois site on a multistate license. Ohio University's disclosure requires an Illinois RN license for that placement.

Illinois approval for out-of-state programs

Illinois has a formal step for outside schools. Its nursing rules (68 Ill. Adm. Code 1300.340, subsection n) have an out-of-state program that wants Illinois clinical placements file a set of documents with the state:

a copy of the executed agreement with each Illinois facility
the syllabus for the course
faculty credentials and preceptor forms
proof of approval or accreditation from the program's home-state board
a cover letter setting out dates, agencies and units

Once granted, approval covers two years, renews, and requires a report each year, and Illinois expects nursing faculty to hold Illinois RN licenses. Because the rule is filed under RN program approval and says nothing about graduate or APRN programs, whether it reaches Ohio University's NP tracks is for Ohio University to settle. Ask your faculty before an Illinois site signs.

Reduced practice, Chicago and downstate

AANP's label for Illinois is reduced practice. In select settings that means a signed collaborative agreement with a physician; elsewhere, an NP who wants to prescribe certain Schedule II medications or benzodiazepines first meets practice-hour and CE conditions and maintains a consultative relationship. Many practices you approach will therefore include a collaborating physician.

Chicago-Naperville-Elgin accounts for roughly 8.7 million Illinoisans. Metro East, Illinois's slice of greater St. Louis, has around 672,000, and Peoria and Rockford each hold somewhere between 337,000 and 364,000. In Chicago, students look at Northwestern Medicine and UChicago Medicine; statewide names include Advocate Health Care, OSF HealthCare and Endeavor Health. Systems that size usually run their own student requests (hospital system applications).

Can I study Ohio University's online FNP program from Chicago?

You can, provided you hold a valid, unrestricted RN license and Illinois stays on the approved list, as it is in September 2026. Coursework runs online; each FNP practicum then needs a Chicago-area site where you and your preceptor both carry Illinois RN licenses, in line with Ohio University's disclosure. Can I do clinicals across the line in Indiana or Wisconsin instead?

Possibly, with the right license. An Illinois license is single-state, so a site in Indiana or Wisconsin, both compact states, needs a license that state honors, and each state has its own rules for outside programs. Ohio University's pages are silent on training outside your home state; read the Indiana guide and ask faculty first.

Is Ohio University's RN-to-BSN open to Illinois nurses?

Yes, without the list conflicts some states face: every RN-to-BSN list includes Illinois. You pick the site for NRSE 4585 and NRSE 4595, which together carry 31.5 clinical hours, and the RN-to-BSN pages ask for a preceptor with at least a BSN whose license matches both your state and the facility's, so an Illinois license again. What should I tell an Illinois practice when I ask for a preceptor?

Lead with what the practice will check: your Illinois RN license, your Ohio University course and its 250 practicum hours, the semester dates, and that faculty approve the preceptor while a clinical supervisor is assigned. An APRN preceptor may also value the 10 CE hours Illinois allows per student, documented by the school; the preceptor should confirm with IDFPR that Ohio University's letter qualifies.
