Ohio University NP clinicals in Wisconsin
As of September 2026 Wisconsin counts among Ohio University's 28 approved states for online graduate nursing study. Two things set it apart: Ohio University's RN-to-BSN pages disagree about it, and Wisconsin's board wants schools from other states to be approved by it, even for graduate study.

Graduate list yes; the RN-to-BSN lists split
For graduate study the answer is simple: live in Wisconsin, hold an unrestricted RN license, and you are eligible to apply. The RN-to-BSN is murkier. Wisconsin is listed on the RN-to-BSN program page, its eligibility page and the OHIO Online listing, yet it drops off the RN-to-BSN contact page and off the course pages for NRSE 4585, NRSE 4595 and NRSE 4600. Wisconsin approves out-of-state schools
Wisconsin's approval rule reaches past pre-licensure education. Its application form for schools based elsewhere (Form 3067-OEE, April 2026 revision) rests on administrative code N 1.06 and extends Board approval to practical, associate, bachelor's (post-licensure included) and graduate programs alike. Schools that win approval later file a self-evaluation to keep it, and DSPS posts a list of the approved out-of-state schools.
The approval belongs to the school, not to you. Before you settle on a Wisconsin site, ask graduatenursing@ohio.edu how Ohio University stands with the Board, and look at the DSPS list yourself. The same form expects every faculty member and preceptor at an in-state site to hold a Wisconsin license or a compact privilege.
A new APRN law changes your preceptor's title
Wisconsin's APRN law (2025 Act 17) took effect on the first of September 2026. Nurse practitioners, CRNAs, CNSs and CNMs now each hold an APRN license from DSPS, and the old APNP licenses have been converted, so a preceptor's record may carry the new title. An NP who wants to practice without a collaborating physician must apply separately and win Board approval.
AANP's map still shows Wisconsin as reduced practice, with NPs collaborating with a physician, and flags the new law's start date. Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay and Appleton
The Milwaukee-Waukesha metro is the state's largest at about 1.58 million people, with Madison near 710,000 and Green Bay and Appleton well behind. Systems NP students consider include Aurora Health Care (an Advocate Health member), Aspirus Health, UW Health, Froedtert ThedaCare Health and Ascension Wisconsin. Licensing for Wisconsin clinicals
Wisconsin has operated under the current compact since January 19, 2018. A Wisconsin license, or a multistate license from another member state, meets the Board's license-or-privilege rule for clinicals. Illinois is the exception next door: it is not a compact state, and per Ohio University's disclosure an APRN student and preceptor training there both need its RN license. Is Ohio University's online FNP open to Wisconsin residents?
It is, as of September 2026, for anyone living in Wisconsin with a valid, unrestricted RN license. The FNP's 750 clinical hours run through NRSE 6840, NRSE 6841 and NRSE 6842, usually in primary care practices and in hospital- or community-run clinics close to where you live. Who can precept an AG-ACNP student in a Wisconsin hospital?
Ohio University's catalog puts AG-ACNP practicums under the supervision of acute-care physicians and advanced practice providers, and the MSN FAQ points to critical care, hospital medicine and emergency departments. Wisconsin's own condition is a preceptor licensed in the state or practicing there through the compact. The hospital's own student process usually comes first.

Early enough for Ohio University to answer the Board approval question and for you to meet Ohio University's clinical packet deadline: the Spring 2027 packet is due 11/09/2026 and the Summer 2027 packet 03/08/2027.
