Ohio University NP clinicals in North Carolina
North Carolina is one of the 28 states on Ohio University's graduate application list as of September 2026, so a resident holding an unencumbered RN license can apply to the online MSN tracks, post-master's certificates and MSN-to-DNP. The state board keeps graduate programs outside its approval work, which leaves three things to settle: your license, a preceptor working under North Carolina's physician agreements, and a site willing to host you.

Restricted practice and the NP who precepts you
AANP files North Carolina under restricted practice. A nurse practitioner there works under a physician agreement that lasts for the whole of their career, and NP licensing sits with a subcommittee drawn from both the nursing and medical boards. So the family NP you ask to host NRSE 6840, or the psychiatric NP you approach about NRSE 6846, brings that physician relationship into your placement.
Ohio University does not publish which credentials may precept FNP or PMHNP students. Those rules live in the track's clinical overview sheets and preceptor packet, which the School of Nursing sends on request from graduatenursing@ohio.edu. What the North Carolina Board of Nursing asks of an out-of-state program
At the graduate level, very little. The NCBON keeps out of post-licensure education altogether, wherever the school is based, and names RN-to-BSN, master's and doctoral programs as beyond its reach. Its rule on visiting students, 21 NCAC 36 .0233, targets people not yet licensed: the host agency's chief nursing administrator asks the Board for approval at least 30 days before such a clinical begins.
Two details still reach you. If your RN license is neither North Carolina's own nor multistate, the Board wants a word with you through its Licensure Department first. And North Carolina joined SARA in June 2016; the Board notes that students of SARA-approved colleges may be eligible for clinicals in the state. Ohio University is an NC-SARA participant, approved through the Ohio Department of Higher Education.
Systems and metros North Carolina students weigh
The biggest names are Atrium Health (Charlotte-based, now within Advocate Health), Duke Health, Novant Health, ECU Health and UNC Health. Ohio University's MSN FAQ cautions that a bigger system may insist students go through its own central preceptor assignment, usually with requests due early, so read a system's student page before approaching one of its NPs. None of these names means a system hosts Ohio University students.
The Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro counts roughly 2.48 million residents on the North Carolina side and reaches into South Carolina. Raleigh-Cary is next at roughly 1.6 million, with Winston-Salem and Greensboro-High Point behind it. Independent practices sit outside any system queue, though each still needs faculty approval.

The current Nurse Licensure Compact has applied in North Carolina since January 19, 2018. When North Carolina is your primary state of residence and your license is multistate, it also covers a site across the line in South Carolina or Virginia, both compact states. Can I complete Ohio University FNP clinicals in North Carolina?
Yes, as a North Carolina resident. The FNP's clinical hours normally take place in primary care offices or in hospital or community clinics near you, with a faculty-approved preceptor and an assigned clinical supervisor. When should I line up a North Carolina preceptor for spring 2027?
Work back from Ohio University's Spring 2027 clinical packet deadline, 11/09/2026, and start earlier if your preceptor works for a system with its own student application. Does North Carolina reward preceptors who teach NP students?
No North Carolina program that pays preceptors or grants them a tax credit appears in the state records we rely on. South Carolina and Virginia have incentives, but both serve students of their own states' schools, not Ohio University's. A clear, well-prepared request is what wins a North Carolina NP over.
Can North Carolina RNs take Ohio University's RN-to-BSN?
Yes. North Carolina sits on each of the four RN-to-BSN lists. Clinical work totals 31.5 hours in NRSE 4585 and NRSE 4595, at a site of your choosing; your preceptor needs at least a BSN, a nursing license valid in both your state and the site's, and no close family tie to you.
