Ohio University Nursing Students in Michigan
Michigan was one of the six original states in Ohio University's online graduate nursing programs, and its residents can still apply in September 2026. Two things set it apart from Ohio's other neighbors: Michigan is not a compact state, and AANP classifies its NP practice as restricted. Both shape where you can train and how your preceptor works.

What Michigan residents can apply to
Michigan has been on Ohio University's list since before 2019, when the online MSN and DNP served only six states; in September 2026 it is one of 28. Admission needs Michigan residence and a valid, unencumbered RN license, and the provost's licensure tables treat the MSN, certificate and DNP as meeting Michigan's requirements. Confirm the current list with Ohio University before you apply.

Outside the compact: a license that stays in Michigan
Michigan is not a Nurse Licensure Compact member; HB 4246, listed as pending on NCSBN's map, would change that. For now a Michigan RN license covers Michigan practice alone, which makes a Michigan site the simplest practicum for most Michigan students.
Ohio's Board recognizes two kinds of RN license for practice there: its own, and a multistate license from a compact member. A Michigan license fits neither, so a Toledo-area practicum means holding an Ohio RN license first. The RN license page walks through that route, and the Ohio guide covers Ohio's student rules.
Moving into Michigan mid-program? The state's RN application asks for a criminal background check, a one-off human trafficking awareness course and two hours of implicit bias training, the last within five years of licensure.
Your Michigan RN license ends at the state line. Settle the license before you ask an Ohio or Indiana clinician to precept you.
Restricted practice and checking a Michigan preceptor
AANP's label for Michigan is restricted practice, since controlled-substance prescribing by NPs depends on a physician delegating it. You will see that in how your preceptor handles scheduled drugs.
The NP title in Michigan is a specialty certification layered on the RN license, issued only to someone who pairs a current Michigan RN license with national certification from a body the Board recognizes; verify both for any Michigan NP preceptor. The Board's program approval rules (R 338.10301 and following) govern Michigan-based schools, and research found no Michigan notice or approval step for programs based elsewhere. For licensure, programs from other states count if accredited by ACEN, CNEA or CCNE, and Ohio University's graduate nursing programs hold CCNE accreditation to December 31, 2031.
A finished preceptor pilot, and Michigan's big systems
In a pilot now finished, the MDHHS Office of Nursing Programs teamed with MSU's College of Nursing to pay preceptors who took MSU family and psychiatric NP students, scaling each payment to the hours pledged across two semesters. Only MSU students were covered, so it offers nothing to preceptors of Ohio University students, and research found no Michigan preceptor tax credit in law.
The state's biggest systems include McLaren Health Care, Corewell Health, Trinity Health Michigan, Henry Ford Health and University of Michigan Health, also called Michigan Medicine. Treat each as a student page to check, not a site that takes Ohio University students. Ohio University's RN-to-BSN pages warn that University of Michigan Health "has non-negotiable deadline dates," advice that holds at any level.

Can a Michigan RN do Ohio University clinicals in Toledo?
Only after adding an Ohio RN license. Michigan licenses are single-state, and Ohio accepts its own license or a compact multistate one. Once licensed in Ohio, you train under Ohio's APRN student exemption and each system's own process; ProMedica, for example, requires a contract with each nursing program.
Is Michigan joining the Nurse Licensure Compact?
A bill is pending. NCSBN's compact map lists HB 4246 as pending NLC legislation in Michigan, but as of September 2026 the state is not a member and Michigan licenses remain single-state. Until that changes, plan your practicum inside Michigan or under another state's license.
Does Ohio University's program qualify me for NP certification in Michigan?
Ohio University's licensure disclosures judge its MSN, certificate and DNP to meet Michigan's educational requirements. Michigan's NP certification then depends on your Michigan RN license and a recognized national certification, and the Board accepts accredited out-of-state programs, CCNE included. Confirm specifics with the Michigan Board of Nursing before you graduate.
Can Michigan RN-to-BSN students complete clinicals locally?
Yes. Michigan shows up on each of Ohio University's RN-to-BSN state lists, so the 31.5 clinical hours can happen near home. The preceptor needs a BSN or higher, cannot be a close relative, and must be licensed where you live and where the facility sits; for a Michigan resident at a Michigan site, that means a Michigan license.
