Mississippi nurses in Ohio University's online graduate programs
As of September 2026, Mississippi counts among Ohio University's approved states for graduate nursing, so a resident with an unrestricted RN license can apply from home. What sets the state apart is who watches the clinical side: out-of-state programs that train students here fall under IHL, the trustees who govern Mississippi's State Institutions of Higher Learning, rather than the nursing board.

Mississippi on Ohio University's program lists
Graduate applicants prove residence in an approved state along with an RN license from one that has no restrictions on it. Mississippi has qualified since Ohio University's 2019 expansion, and the provost's disclosures record it as meeting requirements for the MSN, post-master's certificate and DNP. Treat any list as a snapshot; the approved states page has the rule, and Ohio University has the final word.

IHL, not the Board of Nursing, reviews out-of-state programs
Mississippi divides nursing oversight. PN programs go through its Board of Nursing, while RN degree programs follow IHL's standards, and programs based elsewhere, graduate as well as undergraduate, must meet those standards when they run Mississippi clinicals. A practicum inside the state counts as physical presence, which brings two requirements:
- A review by IHL Nursing Education that can take up to three months. IHL's procedures manual (August 2024, Appendix S) wants the request four months or more ahead from programs controlled outside Mississippi.
- State authorization, through SARA or a non-SARA distance-education authorization from MCCA. Ohio University's provost page says the University is approved to participate in NC-SARA.
Neither side's public pages say whether an IHL review is on file for Ohio University. The filing is the University's, yet it can shape your calendar, so raise it with faculty or graduatenursing@ohio.edu early.
Where students slip: lining up a Mississippi preceptor for next term before asking whether the IHL review covers it. A three-month review cannot be squeezed in at packet time.
Collaborative practice, and the systems students approach
AANP classes Mississippi as reduced practice. Every NP here works under a collaboration, approved by the board, with a physician or dentist who holds a Mississippi license, so any NP preceptor already has one. Faculty at Ohio University sign off on each preceptor regardless, and no Mississippi preceptor tax credit or incentive surfaced in our research.
Jackson is the largest metro at 609,847 people, ahead of Gulfport-Biloxi at 431,329 and Hattiesburg at 158,014, and 277,618 Mississippians live in the Memphis metro. Forrest Health and North Mississippi Health Services count among the big systems, as do University of Mississippi Medical Center and Singing River Health System, along with Baptist Memorial Health Care from Memphis, which runs Jackson's Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. Licensing: the compact and IHL's license standard
Mississippi nurses have held compact privileges since January 19, 2018. Its Board of Nursing says a nurse who stays in good standing and declares a compact state as primary residence may work across other compact states, and employers cannot insist on a remote-state license.
IHL layers on its own standard: post-licensure students in APRN clinical courses, and in other graduate clinical courses, need an unencumbered RN license valid where the clinicals take place, and programs from outside Mississippi are held to it too. Tennessee is a compact state but not on Ohio University's application list, so ask faculty before planning a site on the Memphis side. The RN license guide covers license types.

Does Ohio University accept nursing students from Mississippi?
For graduate study, yes, as of September 2026. Mississippi is one of 28 approved states, so a resident licensed without restrictions can apply to the MSN NP tracks, post-master's certificates, Emergency NP certificate, MSN-to-DNP and the Nurse Leader or Educator MSN. The RN-to-BSN differs: Mississippi is on none of its four state lists.
Do I have to file anything with IHL myself?
IHL's review is aimed at the program, so the filing is Ohio University's rather than yours. Your part is timing: tell faculty early that your clinicals will be in Mississippi and ask whether the review is in place, because IHL says the process can take up to three months.
Can a physician precept me in Mississippi?
Ohio University's public pages mention physicians only for the AG-ACNP, where the catalog places students under "acute-care physicians and advanced practice providers." For FNP and PMHNP, detailed preceptor rules are not public; look to the clinical overview sheets and your Graduate Nursing Student Handbook, both via graduatenursing@ohio.edu. Faculty approve every preceptor either way.
