For graduate study the answer is settled: Arkansas sits on Ohio University's list of 28 approved states as of September 2026. The RN-to-BSN is murkier, and NP clinicals in Arkansas come with a physician-agreement wrinkle worth understanding before you ask anyone to precept you.

Two answers for Arkansas, depending on the program
Arkansas residents holding a valid, unrestricted RN license meet Ohio University's graduate residence rule, and the provost's disclosures mark Arkansas "Yes" for the MSN, post-master's certificate and DNP. The RN-to-BSN splits. Its program, eligibility, OHIO Online and contact pages include Arkansas, yet the NRSE 4585 and NRSE 4595 pages call the course "currently authorized only in" a set of states that leaves Arkansas off.

Reduced practice and the Arkansas preceptor
AANP groups Arkansas with its reduced practice states. Every Arkansas NP holds a regulated physician agreement covering one or more parts of practice, and select medications may be prescribed only inside a physician protocol agreement. Step into an NP's clinic and that collaborating physician is part of the setting, with some of the prescribing you observe running through the protocol.
Ohio University prints no credential list for FNP or PMHNP preceptors; faculty weigh each one against criteria kept in the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook and preceptor packet. The AG-ACNP catalog is the exception, naming "acute-care physicians and advanced practice providers," so Arkansas hospitalists are in scope alongside acute care NPs. More on preceptor requirements.
What the Arkansas board asks of an out-of-state program
Not much, judging by what is published. The Arkansas State Board of Nursing's rules show no approval step for an outside program whose students only train in Arkansas; its education standards touch out-of-state schools when they open a new program there. Board staff have not confirmed that reading, so raise it with faculty if a site asks.
Two published lines still apply. Ohio University's disclosure says clinical faculty in Arkansas must hold an Arkansas license, a matter for the School of Nursing. And Arkansas's Nurse Practice Act writes its student exemption for programs the Arkansas board approves, one more reason to keep your own RN license active and unrestricted all the way through.
Where Arkansas NP students look, and how far a compact license reaches
Greater Little Rock holds roughly 778,000 people and Northwest Arkansas around 622,000, per 2025 Census estimates, with Fort Smith and Jonesboro as smaller hubs. Systems students research include UAMS Health, Arkansas Children's, Baptist Health and CHI St. Vincent in the capital, plus Mercy's hospitals in Fort Smith and Northwest Arkansas. Big systems tend to run their own student request process (hospital system applications).
The Nurse Licensure Compact took effect in Arkansas in January 2018 and is written into its Nurse Practice Act. Can I live in Arkansas and study for Ohio University's PMHNP?
Yes. Living in Arkansas meets the residence half of Ohio University's rule as of September 2026; add a valid, unrestricted RN license and you can apply for the MSN PMHNP, or the post-master's PMHNP certificate if you already hold an MSN. Plan for 750 hours in mental health settings across NRSE 6846, NRSE 6847 and NRSE 6848.
Will my Arkansas multistate license cover clinicals in another state?
In compact states, generally yes, since the multistate license follows your primary state of residence and is honored across member states. It gives no privilege in non-compact states such as Illinois or Hawaii. The site's state may still add its own rules for students, so check before you commit to a preceptor across the line.
Can my Arkansas employer be my clinical site?
Possibly. Ohio University's public pages neither permit nor bar a graduate practicum at your own employer; any limits on your unit or supervisor sit in the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook, which you request from graduatenursing@ohio.edu. If you work for UAMS Health, Baptist Health or another large Arkansas system, its student process may still apply to you.
Can I train across the Oklahoma line near Fort Smith?
Ask first. The Fort Smith metro reaches into Oklahoma, a compact state that is not one of Ohio University's 28 approved states. No ohio.edu page says whether graduate clinicals may happen in a state off that list, so check with your faculty and the Graduate Clinical Coordinator, and learn what Oklahoma's board expects, before approaching a site there.
