Where Massachusetts stands on Ohio University's lists
Graduate admission hinges on two things: where you live, and an RN license there that carries no restrictions. Massachusetts came onto Ohio University's list in the July 2019 expansion, and the provost's licensure disclosures mark it "Yes" for the MSN, post-master's certificate and DNP alike. Lists shift, so check the current version with Ohio University first; the approved states page keeps the full roster.

The Board's review of programs headquartered elsewhere
Under 244 CMR 6.03(2), the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing reviews programs whose parent institution sits outside the state. Its page sets out:
- Part A, a yearly approval of the institution itself, lodged six months or more before any Massachusetts placement.
- Part B, a sign-off for each placement, lodged at least 30 days before it opens; edits are due two weeks out.
- Ratios capped at 1:10 for faculty to students and 1:2 for preceptor to students.
A student waits for the Board's approval letter before starting. Scope is the open issue, because the criteria are framed around programs leading to the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN and never mention graduate or APRN education. Any filing would fall to Ohio University, so ask faculty early whether a Massachusetts NP practicum is covered.
Full practice after two years, and where students look
AANP counts Massachusetts as full practice, though independence starts only after two years alongside a qualifying supervising APRN or physician, with exemptions possible for equivalent experience. A newly certified NP may still be inside that period.
On the Ohio University side, faculty approve every preceptor, and the catalog's lone credential line is AG-ACNP supervision by "acute-care physicians and advanced practice providers." Greater Boston, the Boston-Cambridge-Newton metro, holds about 4.6 million Massachusetts residents; Worcester follows at 888,502 and Springfield at 464,338. Baystate Health and UMass Memorial Health rank among the largest systems, alongside Boston Medical Center Health System, Mass General Brigham and Beth Israel Lahey Health. Big systems may insist on their own central student process, the MSN FAQ warns, so read each one's student page first.
Another 593,640 residents sit in the Providence-Warwick metro and may look across the Rhode Island line. Ohio University's pages say nothing on graduate clinicals outside your home state, so settle that with faculty first; see the out-of-state clinicals guide.
Your license for a Massachusetts clinical
Massachusetts signed the compact into law in November 2024; the Board, though, treats it as inactive until implementation is finished. Having won conditional clearance for FBI record checks in May 2026, it now targets May 2027, while NCSBN still lists the date as TBD. Meanwhile the standard Massachusetts application governs, and the separate APRN Compact has not been adopted here.

Yes, as of September 2026: Massachusetts residence plus an unrestricted RN license from an approved state meets the entry rule. The FNP calls for 750 direct care hours over three 250-hour practicums, done near home with an approved preceptor and an assigned clinical supervisor.
Is Massachusetts on the Ohio University RN-to-BSN state list?
No version includes it. Ohio University prints four RN-to-BSN lists: 32 states plus DC on the program page, 30 on the contact page, 28 on the NRSE 4585 and 4595 pages and 27 on the NRSE 4600 page. Since those lists disagree and change, email the School of Nursing before deciding.
Can an NP still in the Massachusetts two-year supervised period precept me?
Ohio University publishes no minimum years of experience for graduate preceptors; faculty judge each person. The two-year requirement governs Massachusetts practice, not precepting. An NP still working with a supervising APRN or physician may qualify, but check with faculty and the practice before relying on that preceptor.
Could I train at a New Hampshire site while living in Massachusetts?
Ask faculty first; nothing public from Ohio University covers graduate clinicals across a state line. Then look at licensing. New Hampshire belongs to the compact, but until Massachusetts implements it, a Massachusetts license reaches only Massachusetts, so a New Hampshire license would be needed.
