Ohio University's online NP programs for nurses in Hawaii
Hawaii joined Ohio University's graduate list in 2019 and remains on it as of September 2026. Clinicals in the islands turn on three facts: Hawaii sits outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, its preceptor tax credit is reserved for Hawaii-based programs, and Ohio University's RN-to-BSN pages disagree about the state.

The RN-to-BSN split is sharp. Its program, eligibility and OHIO Online pages include Hawaii, while the RN-to-BSN contact page and the NRSE 4585, NRSE 4595 and NRSE 4600 pages omit it, and the contact page adds that continuing after a move to an unauthorized state is not assured. Why a Hawaii license comes first
Hawaii sits outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, with no bill to join showing on the compact map. A multistate license from the mainland carries no privilege in the islands, so the license you practice on at a Hawaii site is one Hawaii issued. Anyone relocating to Hawaii mid-program should start that license well ahead of the next practicum. The RN license page explains the wider rules.
Faculty face a narrower test. The Hawaii Board of Nursing's FAQ on out-of-state online post-licensure programs says a Hawaii license becomes necessary for faculty only if they are in Hawaii in person, teaching or precepting, and that the board neither approves such programs without a Hawaii campus nor expects notice from them. The FAQ illustrates with RN-to-BSN and LPN-to-RN programs; no Hawaii source speaks to graduate NP programs directly. Pre-licensure is stricter: in 2016 a board committee turned away a mainland pre-licensure BSN program that wanted to place a student in Hawaii.
Full practice NPs, island by island
AANP rates Hawaii full practice, so experienced NPs with their own practices are realistic preceptors. Geography matters a great deal here. Census estimates for 2025 put urban Honolulu near 989,000, the Kahului-Wailuku area near 161,000 and Hilo-Kailua near 210,000, and a site on your own island is worth more than a famous name across the channel.
Four systems dominate students' research: The Queen's Health Systems, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), and Hawaii Pacific Health, whose hospitals include Straub, Kapiolani, Wilcox and Pali Momi. Each sets its own student process, often with early dates (hospital system applications).
The preceptor tax credit, and who it covers
Hawaii rewards volunteer preceptors through a nonrefundable income tax credit created by Act 43 of 2018 (HRS 235-110.25). The credit is open to physicians, APRNs and pharmacists who live in Hawaii and practice primary care there; they claim it for unpaid supervised rotations certified by the Hawaii Department of Health, subject to a per-preceptor yearly cap and a statewide limit.
Ohio University students fall outside it. The credit counts APRN students only when their program is Hawaii-accredited or Hawaii-based and draws over 50% of its students from Hawaii. Tell a Hawaii NP up front that your rotation will not earn the credit; that candor keeps the conversation on scheduling.

Can I earn Ohio University's online PMHNP while living in Hawaii?
Yes. As of September 2026, Hawaii residents with an unencumbered RN license qualify to apply for the MSN PMHNP or its post-master's version. Ohio University describes PMHNP clinicals as primarily community-based, so island mental health agencies and treatment programs are typical places to complete the 750 hours with a faculty-approved preceptor.
What if I move to Hawaii partway through the program?
Hawaii is an approved state, so the move keeps you inside Ohio University's residence rule, but tell graduatenursing@ohio.edu before you go. Apply for a Hawaii RN license early, because a compact license from your old state gives no privilege there, and line up a Hawaii preceptor for your next practicum before that term's clinical packet deadline.
Is the 750-hour requirement any different in Hawaii?
No. Ohio University sets the hours, not the state: 750 for each MSN NP track and matching certificate, split across three 250-hour practicums. Ohio University's certificates hub adds a footnote that states can set their own clinical-hour expectations for licensure, so check with the Hawaii Board of Nursing about anything it expects for APRN licensure after graduation.
Which Hawaii settings fit the AG-ACNP track?
Acute care, which in Hawaii means hospitals. Ohio University's catalog puts AG-ACNP students under acute-care physicians and advanced practice providers, in units such as intensive care, emergency and hospital medicine.
