Where Florida stands with Ohio University
Florida residents with a valid, unrestricted RN license can apply to any Ohio University graduate nursing program. The state has been on the graduate list since the 2019 expansion, the provost's disclosures back that up for the MSN, the post-master's certificate and the DNP, and the RN-to-BSN lists all carry Florida. Confirm before you apply or move; the approved states page tracks changes.

Restricted practice and the protocol behind a Florida NP
AANP rates Florida restricted. For select Florida NPs, a physician protocol lasts the length of a career, though exemptions exist. So when a Florida NP says yes to precepting you, a protocol physician often sits somewhere in that practice, and it is fair to ask early whether that physician should know a student is coming.
Ohio University leaves most preceptor criteria to faculty approval and the preceptor packet, but the MSN FAQ does name settings. FNP students train in "primary-care offices or hospital/community-based clinics," PMHNP students in settings such as community mental health agencies, and AG-ACNP students in critical care, hospital medicine and emergency units.
Florida's TEACH funding, and why it passes Ohio University students by
Florida's TEACH program (Training, Education, and Clinicals in Health) sits with the Agency for Health Care Administration under section 409.91256. It pays qualifying facilities by the clinical hour for hosting nursing students and primary care APRN students. Qualifying hosts are mostly safety-net settings: federally qualified health centers, rural clinics, community mental health and behavioral health clinics, and some shortage-area nonprofits. Money depends on yearly appropriations, preceptors need Florida licenses, and the law sunsets July 1, 2034.
The limit that matters to you: reimbursement is only for students of accredited programs based in Florida. A clinic that takes an Ohio University student collects nothing from TEACH for those hours, so your request has to stand on other merits: a clear schedule, a finished packet, a student ready from week one.
The slip to avoid: pitching a Florida clinic on TEACH reimbursement. Ohio University students fall outside it, and a clinic that learns this late may back out.
Board rules, the compact and Florida's big markets
Florida's approval statute, section 464.019, reaches institutions that run pre-licensure programs in the state, matching how the Florida Board of Nursing describes its role. A search of Florida law turned up no provision requiring a graduate NP program from another state to get approval, or even give notice, before its students start clinicals. The compact has applied in Florida since January 2018; a Florida multistate license also works next door in Georgia and Alabama, but neither state is on Ohio University's approved list, so ask faculty first.
Census estimates for 2025 show Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach near 6.4 million, Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater near 3.4 million, Orlando near 3 million and Jacksonville near 1.8 million. AdventHealth, HCA Florida Healthcare, BayCare, Baptist Health South Florida and UF Health are names students research; systems that size typically run their own student applications (hospital system applications).

Can I study Ohio University's online FNP from Florida?
Florida residents can, as of September 2026, provided their RN license is valid and unrestricted. The MSN FNP and the post-master's FNP certificate share the same three practicums, NRSE 6840, NRSE 6841 and NRSE 6842, worth 750 hours in all, and you complete them in Florida under a faculty-approved preceptor. Can a Florida preceptor claim any state incentive for teaching me?
Not through TEACH, Florida's clinical-training fund, which pays facilities rather than individual preceptors and only for students of accredited Florida-based programs. No preceptor benefit for nursing preceptors appears on Ohio University's public pages either. Your offer to a busy Florida practice is an organized student and a complete packet.
Is Florida on Ohio University's RN-to-BSN list?
It is, on every one of the four RN-to-BSN lists. Courses last five weeks and run fully online; two of them, NRSE 4585 and NRSE 4595, carry the program's 31.5 clinical hours, done at a Florida site you select with a preceptor who holds a BSN or higher and a Florida license. How early should a Florida student line up a site at a large system?
Earlier than the clinical packet deadline suggests. Ohio University's MSN FAQ warns that centralized requests at large systems often must be made well in advance, and those systems set their own dates. Work back from whichever comes first: your packet deadline, such as 11/09/2026 for spring 2027, or the system's own cutoff, which can land months before the term.
