Ohio University's online NP programs, from Portland to Bangor

Maine has been on Ohio University's graduate list since 2019 and is still there as of September 2026, so Maine nurses can apply to the online MSN, certificates and MSN-to-DNP. State paperwork for clinicals is light. What deserves attention is a 24-month rule for new NPs, the compact's reach into New Hampshire, and an RN-to-BSN list that disagrees with itself.

For the RN-to-BSN, Maine appears on the program, eligibility, OHIO Online and contact pages but not on the NRSE 4585, NRSE 4595 or NRSE 4600 pages, which describe the course as authorized only in the states they print. Settle that with the RN-to-BSN advisors before enrolling (RN-to-BSN).

The 24-month rule and your Maine preceptor

AANP counts Maine as full practice after a two-year transition: 24 months of practice supervised by a physician or another NP, or employment by a hospital or clinic that has a physician serving as medical director. Maine therefore has two kinds of NP: those practicing on their own, and newer ones still inside that supervised stretch.

Which of them may precept an Ohio University student is settled at faculty approval, using standards set out in your Graduate Nursing Student Handbook and the preceptor packet, both available from graduatenursing@ohio.edu. Light state paperwork, with one caveat

Nothing the Maine State Board of Nursing publishes speaks to schools from other states sending students to Maine sites. Its education rule, Chapter 7, deals with approving Maine's own pre-licensure programs, and its rules list links to nothing on outside clinical placements.

The caveat: Maine's Nurse Practice Act exempts only students whose board-approved program leads to a first license. Graduate students fall outside that wording, which makes your own active, unrestricted RN license the footing for every Maine clinical day. Compact licensing has been in effect in Maine since January 2018, so a multistate license issued in Maine carries over to other member states (RN license for clinicals).

Portland, Bangor, Lewiston and the New Hampshire line

Greater Portland is Maine's largest market at roughly 578,000 residents in 2025 Census estimates; the Bangor area follows near 158,000, with Lewiston-Auburn close to 116,000. Among systems, Maine NP students look at MaineHealth and Northern Light Health, and also at MaineGeneral Health and Central Maine Healthcare; larger systems often route students through a central process of their own.

In York County, a New Hampshire site may be the shorter drive. New Hampshire is also an approved compact state, but Ohio University's disclosure refers programs to New Hampshire's "School Approval Needed Chart" for clinical placements there, so read the New Hampshire guide before approaching a site.

Yes. A Maine address and a valid, unrestricted RN license meet Ohio University's graduate entry rule as of September 2026. The FNP's 750 hours then happen in Maine primary care, whether a small-town practice or a clinic inside a larger system, under an approved preceptor with an Ohio University clinical supervisor assigned alongside.

I moved to Maine from another compact state. Which license do I use?

Compact licenses are tied to your primary residence, so once Maine becomes home you apply for a Maine license and use it for Maine clinicals. Check timing with the Maine State Board of Nursing, and tell graduatenursing@ohio.edu about the move, because Ohio University ties admission to living in an approved state.

How does the clinical year run for a Maine FNP student?

Once clinicals start, Ohio University schedules one practicum per 15-week semester at 250 hours each: NRSE 6840, then NRSE 6841, then NRSE 6842. That averages close to 17 clinical hours a week; the MSN FAQ mentions 2-3 days at the clinical site on top of coursework. With Maine winter driving in mind, a preceptor close to home is worth prioritizing.

Mental health settings of several kinds: the MSN FAQ names community and private agencies, school-based health centers, correctional facilities and substance-abuse treatment programs. In Maine those range from community agencies around Portland and Bangor to behavioral health units within bigger systems, all setting their own terms for students.
