NRSE 6848: inpatient, community and the final OCI
NRSE 6848, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Practicum III, closes the PMHNP track with 250 hours in "the inpatient and community setting." It requires NRSE 6847, runs in fall and spring, and is the only PMHNP practicum marked for an on-campus intensive, set for 11/9–11/10/2026 in Dublin this fall. Two settings, a hospital's own calendar and a trip to Dublin make it the most logistics-heavy of the three.

Inpatient and community in one course
The catalog describes 6848 as covering "the role, competencies and proficiencies" of the PMHNP "in the inpatient and community setting," and it asks for advanced clinical judgment and decision making as part of an interdisciplinary team, across the lifespan. It is the first PMHNP description to name inpatient care outright.
Ohio University does not say publicly whether both settings must appear in your 250 hours or how to divide them. Your syllabus and clinical overview sheets are the guide, and faculty approve each preceptor and site. If your faculty expect exposure to both, plan for either one preceptor who works across a unit and a clinic, or two approved preceptors, and settle which before the packet goes in.
Where the hours can come from
Community options are the ones Ohio University's MSN FAQ lists for the track. Inpatient psychiatric units usually sit inside hospital systems, and each system writes its own student policy. The rows below repeat only what each source publishes.

The 6848 intensive in Dublin
The Knowledge Center marks NRSE 6848 "On-Campus OCI Required In Course." The fall 2026 session is 11/9–11/10/2026 at 6805 Bobcat Way, Dublin. A spring 2027 date is not on the important dates page yet; the Knowledge Center's intensives page says dates are published at least three months ahead, so check that page as your spring term approaches.
For PMHNP students, this is the one clinical intensive the tentative table marks, even though Ohio University's course pages talk about workshops in the first and final clinical courses. Tell every preceptor in your plan about the two Dublin days before the schedule is set, particularly an inpatient unit that builds rosters weeks out. An older Ohio University page still places MSN intensives in Athens; the dated table says Dublin.
Terms, packets and the order of work
On the tentative table, 6848 runs in fall and spring. The packet for fall 2026 was due 07/06/2026, and for spring 2027 it is due 11/09/2026, the same day the fall intensive opens. A summer 6847 feeds straight into a fall 6848. The full calendar for each term is on our packet deadlines page.

Finishing the PMHNP
6848 is the last course in the MSN PMHNP and in the post-master's certificate. The MSN catalog ends the program with a comprehensive exam; the certificate's catalog page names no culminating experience at all. The graduation application sits in MyOHIO Student Center from the first day of the term, and it pays to check early with your state's board about what APRN licensure requires, as the catalog advises.
On a second attempt, the catalog and the Knowledge Center point in opposite directions, "May not be retaken" against a once-per-course repeat; failing or repeating a clinical course walks through it. Because 6848 is the final practicum, a shortfall here can move your graduation term, so build some margin into the 250 hours.

When is the NRSE 6848 on-campus intensive?
The 2026-27 important dates page lists 11/9–11/10/2026 at 6805 Bobcat Way in Dublin, Ohio, for the fall section. No spring 2027 date is posted yet. An older Ohio University page still describes MSN intensives as visits to the Athens campus; the dated table says Dublin, and that is the one to follow.
Is NRSE 6848 the last course in the PMHNP certificate too?
Yes. The post-master's PMHNP certificate uses NRSE 6846, NRSE 6847 and NRSE 6848 at 250 hours each plus NRSE 7818, and 6848 is its final practicum. Unlike the MSN, the certificate's catalog page lists no culminating exam. Ohio University's pages give its length as three semesters, one year or up to two years.
Can I take NRSE 6848 in summer?
Not on the tentative course offerings table, which lists fall and spring. Since 6847 runs in spring and summer, a summer 6847 is followed by a fall 6848. Your program of study, set with your School of Nursing academic advisor, fixes the exact term, so check it before you approach preceptors.
Can my PMHNP preceptor be outside Ohio?
Yes, as long as you live in one of Ohio University's 28 approved states and satisfy that state's requirements. West Virginia is one state with extra steps: it requires board approval and evidence that the home state permits out-of-state clinicals, according to Ohio University's licensure disclosure. Can a correctional or substance-abuse facility cover the community side of 6848?
Ohio University's MSN FAQ lists both correctional facilities and substance-abuse treatment facilities among the usual PMHNP settings, so either can be proposed. Faculty approve the preceptor and site, and they decide how the hours count against the course's inpatient and community focus. Raise that question with them before the packet date rather than after the term starts.
