Ohio University's post-master's PMHNP certificate: have your preceptor in mind before you apply
Ohio University's PMHNP certificate page gives APRN applicants an unusually direct instruction: have possible preceptors and sites in mind when you apply, and ask the School of Nursing for the clinical overview sheets and preceptor packet. The reason is timing. A licensed APRN will usually start NRSE 6846, the first of three 250-hour mental health practicums, in the very first semester.

What Ohio University tells APRN applicants
Under the heading “Students with a current APRN License”, the certificate page says: “Current APRNs who are pursuing an APRN certificate will, more than likely, progress directly into a clinical course in their first semester. This means that current APRNs should have possible preceptors and sites in mind when applying”, then asks those applicants to “contact the School of Nursing at graduatenursing@ohio.edu and request the clinical overview sheets and preceptor packet for their program.”
No other public Ohio University page spells out the timing so plainly. The sentence speaks of APRN certificates in general, yet it appears only on the PMHNP certificate page; the FNP and AG-ACNP certificate pages leave it out. For a PMHNP applicant it is the working rule: the search begins with the application, not after the acceptance letter.
The certificate at a glance

The page's admission table lists older prerequisite numbers (NRSE 6210, NRSE 6230, NRSE 6221) than its curriculum section, the same mismatch found on the other two NP certificate pages. The gaps analysis settles which of your past courses count.
Three semesters or up to two years?
Ohio University's own figures for the certificate's length do not agree. The catalog says it “can be completed in 3 semesters,” and the page badge says three. The certificates index says one year. The FAQ on the certificate page says “This program is 40 credit hours and takes up to 2 years to complete,” yet 40 credits is the MSN total, and the catalog puts the certificate at 20.
The Knowledge Center's tentative offerings table adds a wrinkle. It shows NRSE 6846 in fall and spring, NRSE 6847 in spring and summer, and NRSE 6848 in fall and spring only. A fall entrant who starts Practicum I at once and takes Practicum II in spring would, on that table, wait until the next fall for NRSE 6848, which points to a fourth semester unless the schedule shifts.
Ask for your program of study in writing once the gaps analysis is done, and book preceptors against that document rather than against any single web figure.
The mental health practicums
The certificate uses the MSN's three psychiatric practicums, each requiring the one before, with NRSE 7818 alongside. The MSN PMHNP guide looks at the same courses from the degree side.

The MSN FAQ's list of usual PMHNP settings applies here too: private or community mental health agencies, correctional facilities, school-based health centers and substance-abuse treatment facilities, each with an approved preceptor and an assigned clinical supervisor. The certificates index adds that practicum hours are completed locally, in your preferred setting.
What the clinical overview sheets and preceptor packet are for
Neither document sits on a public page. Enrolled students reach them through the School of Nursing's Forms and Resources page, which opens only with a university Microsoft sign-in, and certificate applicants get them by request from graduatenursing@ohio.edu, the inbox the Knowledge Center names for clinical placement and paperwork questions.
Use them early. A psychiatric NP weighing whether to take a student usually wants to know what the school will ask of them, and having Ohio University's own overview sheets and preceptor packet in hand lets you answer from the source instead of from memory.

Where APRN applicants slip: treating “preceptors in mind” as a later task. The certificate page places it at the point of application, because Practicum I can start in the same term you do.

Questions Ohio University students ask
Is the PMHNP certificate 20 or 40 credits?
The 2026-27 Graduate Catalog lists 20 credit hours: three 6-credit practicums plus the 2-credit NRSE 7818. The 40-credit line in the certificate page's FAQ matches the MSN PMHNP total and looks carried over from the degree page. A gaps analysis can add prerequisite courses, which raises your own total, so have the School of Nursing confirm it on your program of study.
Who do I email for the PMHNP preceptor packet?
The School of Nursing at graduatenursing@ohio.edu. The certificate page names that address for requesting the clinical overview sheets and preceptor packet, and the Graduate Nursing Knowledge Center lists the same inbox for clinical placement and paperwork questions. Say which certificate you are applying to and your intended start term so the right documents come back.
Do I need separate malpractice insurance for the certificate?
Evidence of malpractice insurance is a pre-clinical requirement across Ohio University's graduate programs. Ohio University's DNP page spells out, for APRN-track students, a nurse practitioner malpractice policy of your own rather than employer coverage, and the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook sets the certificate detail. Confirm that your policy covers you in the student role before the packet deadline.
Can I keep working as an APRN during the certificate?
The certificate is delivered online with practicum hours completed locally, which suits a working schedule. Each practicum still needs 250 hours inside one semester, so agree a steady weekly pattern with your preceptor before the term opens, and keep student hours clearly apart from your paid APRN work in your records.
Will I go to Dublin for the PMHNP certificate?
Plan on it for Practicum III. The Knowledge Center marks NRSE 6848 as an OCI course, with the 2026 visit on 11/9 and 11/10 at 6805 Bobcat Way in Dublin, Ohio, and the certificate FAQs speak of two OCIs. Should the gaps analysis add NRSE 7230, that course brings a Dublin visit of its own. The OCI guide lists every date.
