NRSE 6846: your first psychiatric practicum
Ohio University's catalog says NRSE 6846 "focuses on the transition to the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner role." It carries 6 credits and 250 practicum hours, requires NRSE 7230, and runs in fall and spring. For an RN moving into psychiatry from another specialty, it can also be the first stretch of practice outside familiar ground, so the preceptor's teaching counts as much as the site.

What the catalog means by the transition to the role
The description pairs that transition with advanced assessment, diagnosis and clinical management of the developmental, physical and psycho-social health issues of individuals and families "across the lifespan in the psychiatric mental healthcare setting." In plain terms, you begin doing psychiatric evaluations and treatment planning yourself, with families and every age group in view.
The next two courses widen the lens. NRSE 6847 adds groups and work as a team member, and NRSE 6848 moves to inpatient and community care. That progression means the first course is best spent building a solid psychiatric interview and diagnostic routine with a preceptor who has time to teach it, rather than chasing the most specialized site you can find.
Settings Ohio University names, and what to confirm at each
The MSN FAQ lists where PMHNP clinicals usually happen, and the track page describes supervised experience in agencies and programs that are "primarily community-based." Each setting raises its own questions for a first course.

Intensives: a question the pages leave open
The Knowledge Center's tentative course table marks NRSE 6848, the final PMHNP course, for an on-campus intensive, and leaves NRSE 6846 unmarked. The PMHNP courses page mentions three intensives, the track FAQ says two, and the FNP courses page, describing Ohio University's APRN programs as a whole, attaches clinical workshops to each track's opening and closing clinical course.
The only PMHNP clinical intensive with a posted 2026-27 date is the 6848 visit on 11/9–11/10/2026. Ask your course faculty whether your 6846 section includes a visit, and see our on-campus intensives page for the dates as they appear. Any visit added later would come with at least three months' notice under the Knowledge Center's own rule, which is enough to plan clinic days around.
Carry-in from 7230, carry-out to 6847
NRSE 7230, Advanced Health Assessment, is the catalog requisite and the last course before clinicals; its fall pre-clinical intensive in Dublin ran 9/18–9/19/2026. The physical assessment skills from it still matter in psychiatry, where medical causes and medication effects belong in every workup.
After 6846 comes NRSE 6847, which the catalog opens only to students who have completed 6846. It runs in spring and summer, so on the tentative table a fall 6846 leads to a spring 6847 and a spring 6846 to a summer 6847. Repeat rules differ between the catalog and the Knowledge Center; see failing or repeating a clinical course. Keep a running list of the diagnoses and age groups you see in 6846; it shows at a glance what your 6847 site needs to add.
The pace of a first psychiatric term
Two hundred fifty hours have to fit inside one term, next to coursework. The MSN FAQ budgets 18-20 hours of weekly study during clinical courses and adds 2-3 days at the site. The PMHNP track page gives two answers on load: its FAQ says students typically take two asynchronous courses per semester, and elsewhere on the page it limits students to a single clinical course each term after clinicals start. Your program of study settles which pattern is yours.
Fixed clinic days tend to work best in a first psychiatric course. Evaluations take time, and follow-up visits teach the most when you see the same patients return, which is hard to arrange with scattered days. Agree the weekly pattern with your preceptor before the packet goes in, so faculty see a schedule that reaches 250 hours.

Can current APRNs start with NRSE 6846 in their first semester?
Ohio University's PMHNP certificate page says current APRNs pursuing a certificate will, more than likely, move directly into a clinical course in their first semester, and should have possible preceptors and sites in mind when applying. Is NRSE 6846 offered in summer?
The tentative course table lists fall and spring only. The MSN PMHNP track page says the program admits students each fall and spring, while the certificate's catalog entry lists fall entry. Your advisor handles registration each term from your program of study, so that plan is the reference for your own term.
Does a correctional facility count for PMHNP hours?
Ohio University's MSN FAQ lists correctional facilities among the usual PMHNP settings, next to private and community mental health agencies, school-based health centers and substance-abuse treatment facilities. Faculty still approve the specific preceptor and site. Expect the facility to run its own clearance steps, so open that conversation earlier than you would with a clinic.
How many PMHNP clinical hours does Ohio University require in total?
