The second PMHNP course names three kinds of work in a single sentence. Individual care continues from 6846; groups and families are new in the description, and the setting has to supply all three. That is the practical test for any 6847 site.

Of the settings in Ohio University's MSN FAQ, community mental health agencies and substance-abuse treatment facilities often run groups alongside individual care, and school-based health centers work with families by design. A private practice can fit if it offers group or family work; some concentrate on individual medication visits, so ask before you commit.
Because the course sits in the middle of the sequence, keeping your 6846 preceptor is worth weighing. Continuity helps, but only if that site can add groups and families. Questions to settle with a prospective 6847 site
A short conversation with the preceptor, before anyone signs anything, tells you whether a site can carry this course. These are the questions that separate a good 6847 placement from a repeat of 6846.
- Do you run group sessions I can join, and on which days of the week?
- Will I see children, adolescents or older adults, not only working-age adults?
- Can I sit in on treatment-team meetings or case reviews?
- Who would supervise me on days you are out, and could that clinician be approved as well?
- Does the practice keep its full schedule through summer, if my section runs then?
Clear answers to these make the faculty review simpler, because the fit with the catalog description is visible on paper.
Spring or summer sections
The tentative course table offers NRSE 6847 in spring and summer. A spring 2027 section (01/11–05/01/2027) needs its packet by 11/09/2026; a summer section (05/10–08/14/2027) by 03/08/2027. Both dates sit with every other term on our packet deadlines page.

School-based health centers may keep reduced hours when schools close, and some agencies thin their group schedules; confirm the site's summer calendar can support 250 hours before the packet goes in. The summer 6847 packet deadline, 03/08/2027, arrives roughly halfway through a spring 6846, so the second site has to be chosen while the first course is still running.

- Your psychiatric assessment and diagnostic routine, and your first preceptor's feedback
- Current compliance items: immunizations, BLS, background checks and malpractice insurance
- A clear note of what 6846 lacked, such as children, families or group work
- The approval details for any preceptor you plan to keep, so the packet reflects the new course
What 6847 sets up: NRSE 6848, the final course, focuses on inpatient and community settings and is the PMHNP practicum with an on-campus intensive in Dublin (11/9–11/10/2026 for the fall section). On the tentative table it runs in fall and spring, so a summer 6847 leads into a fall 6848, and a spring 6847 toward whichever 6848 offering your program of study assigns.
Rules and time in the middle course
NRSE 6847 carries no on-campus intensive on the tentative table, so your clinic weeks stay whole. For time, count on the MSN FAQ's clinical-course pattern of several site days a week with study on top, and on a single practicum per term, which is what the PMHNP track FAQ describes once clinicals are under way.
The catalog marks the course "May not be retaken," which conflicts with the Knowledge Center's rule that any single course may be repeated once; failing or repeating a clinical course covers that. Dropping 6847 also puts you out of sequence and calls for a new program of study, so talk to your faculty before you remove it from your schedule.

The catalog lists NRSE 6846, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Practicum I. Oddly, 6847 also appears as the requisite on the catalog entry for NRSE 6845, the third AG-ACNP practicum, which looks like a listing error on that course and has no bearing on PMHNP students.
Do I need group therapy experience for NRSE 6847?
The catalog description names individuals, groups and families, but no public Ohio University page sets a number of group hours or sessions. Your syllabus and the clinical overview sheets, which the School of Nursing's graduatenursing@ohio.edu inbox can point you to, are where any requirement would appear. A site that runs groups keeps you covered either way.
Can I complete 6847 on a hospital behavioral health unit?
Hospital units are possible, but each system sets its own rules. University Hospitals' Behavioral Health Institute page, for example, accepts graduate APRN students, asks that the school have an affiliation agreement with the system and requires an active Ohio RN license. Ohio University's PMHNP settings lean community-based, and faculty approve the site.
Is NRSE 6847 offered in fall?
Not on the Knowledge Center's tentative offerings, which list spring and summer. With 6846 and 6848 both offered in fall and spring, your advisor's program of study places 6847 in whichever spring or summer term fits your start, and the packet date for that term follows from it.
How does NRSE 6847 differ from 6846?
NRSE 6846 centers on the transition into the PMHNP role with individuals and families. NRSE 6847 keeps advanced assessment, diagnosis and management but adds groups and places you as an interdisciplinary team member. Both carry 6 credits, split 3.5 lecture and 5.0 clinical, and 250 practicum hours, and 6846 is the requisite for 6847.
