Ohio University's MSN Nurse Leader and its 500 leadership practicum hours
Ohio University's online MSN Nurse Leader (MS1240) is 31 credits with 500 practicum hours in two courses, NRSE 6850 and NRSE 6851, completed with an approved preceptor in a health care organization near you. What the Nurse Leader track is
The MSN Nurse Leader prepares nurses for management and administration. The 2026-27 graduate catalog records it as MS1240, online and entering in fall, and says it can be completed in five semesters. Fall 2027 is the next intake on Ohio University's track page.
Its 31 credits combine seven non-clinical courses with two practicums. Four are the shared graduate foundation (NRSE 7001, NRSE 7810, NRSE 7811, NRSE 7812). The leadership content comes from NRSE 7817 Business and Resource Management, NRSE 7830 Strategic Planning and NRSE 7831 Nursing Administration and Management. The practicums, NRSE 6850 and NRSE 6851, carry 6 credits each.
One count on Ohio University's pages is off: the track page advertises 10 courses while the courses page lists nine, and the catalog's list matches the nine. The graduate catalog allows six calendar years to finish a master's degree.
The practicum path
Each practicum is 250 clock hours. The Knowledge Center's tentative offerings schedule NRSE 6850 for fall and NRSE 6851 for spring, the second requiring the first, and the catalog gives both a contact-hour line of 3.5 lecture and 5.0 clinical.

Read the two descriptions side by side and the arc is plain: a unit-level view in the fall, an organization-level view in the spring. That shapes who you ask. A nurse manager running a unit fits the first course well, while the second calls for someone whose work reaches strategy, planning and system-wide change.
Settings and the preceptor you need
Ohio University's track page sets three conditions: an approved preceptor, an approved site and an assigned clinical supervisor. It describes the 500 hours as time in a leadership role in a health care facility near you, and adds that Nurse Leader practicums are usually completed within organizational units of health care organizations.
The MSN FAQ's rule on choosing preceptors covers this track as well. It lets you put forward your own preceptor for faculty approval, names the Graduate Clinical Coordinator as another route, and warns that large hospital systems may make you use their own centralized request, often well ahead of the term. Before either practicum, the graduate catalog expects immunizations and BLS to meet the Graduate Handbook's standard, background checks at federal and state level with no disqualifying offenses, and proof of malpractice coverage. Our clinical compliance page walks through each item.
Timing, packets and the online format
The track page states that the Nurse Leader does not require any on-campus residency, which sets it apart from Ohio University's NP tracks and DNP, where intensives in Dublin are part of the plan. Coursework runs online in Canvas, and the practicum happens where you live.
Clinical paperwork still follows the graduate calendar. The clinical packet for a fall practicum is due in early summer, and some hospital systems close their student windows earlier than that; for Fall 2026, Ohio University's packet deadline was 07/06/2026. Each practicum appears once a year in the tentative offerings, NRSE 6850 in fall and NRSE 6851 in spring. Missing one can therefore mean a year's wait for it to run again, which is why a confirmed preceptor matters more than a perfect one found late.
Plan the weekly load too. Spread across a 15-week semester, 250 hours averages close to 17 hours a week, and Ohio University's MSN FAQ describes clinical-course weeks as about 18 to 20 hours of schoolwork plus 2 to 3 days at the clinical site.
The mistake to avoid: leaving the NRSE 6850 preceptor search until summer. The fall packet deadline comes first, and the course will not run again until the following fall.
The Nursing Leadership certificate
If you already have a master's degree, the post-master's Nursing Leadership certificate (CTNLCG) offers the same two practicums. The catalog lists NRSE 6850 and NRSE 6851 at 250 hours each, 500 practicum hours in all, plus NRSE 7817, NRSE 7830 and NRSE 7831, with a fall-only entry term and completion in five semesters.
The catalog does not print a credit total for the certificate. Its web page calls it a 21-credit program, and Ohio University's certificates index gives its length as 1.5 years. The same certificate also sits inside the DNP, where the curriculum page lists 55 total credits for students who add it.

Do I need RN work experience for Ohio University's Nurse Leader track?
Ohio University's pages disagree. The catalog page for the MSN Nurse Leader does not list the two years of full-time-equivalent RN experience that the NP tracks require, but the Nurse Leader FAQ on ohio.edu answers yes to an experience requirement. Ask the admissions team which applies before you submit, and keep proof of your RN employment ready either way.
Is NRSE 6852 part of the MSN Nurse Leader?
No. The catalog's MSN Nurse Leader requirements stop at NRSE 6850 and NRSE 6851. NRSE 6852 Nurse Executive in Practice, a third 6-credit practicum offered in summer, belongs to the BSN-to-DNP Nurse Leader track in the catalog. If a plan you have seen lists three Nurse Leader practicums, it is describing that doctoral track.
Who supervises my Nurse Leader practicum besides the preceptor?
Ohio University's track page pairs every approved preceptor with an assigned clinical supervisor. Your preceptor guides the day-to-day leadership work at the site, while the public pages leave the supervisor's duties to your course syllabus and the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook. What happens if I fail NRSE 6850?
The sources conflict. The catalog entry for Ohio University's practicum courses, including the Nurse Leader ones, reads "May not be retaken", while the Nursing Knowledge Center allows one repeat of any course and dismisses a student on a third failed attempt. Can Nurse Leader practicum hours count toward a DNP later?
Possibly. Ohio University's MSN-to-DNP runs a gaps analysis on clinical and practice hours from earlier graduate coursework and credits them individually toward its 1,000 post-baccalaureate hours.
