Who does what in an Ohio University practicum
An Ohio University clinical course involves more people and offices than most students expect: you, your preceptor, course faculty, an assigned clinical supervisor, the Graduate Clinical Coordinator, your academic advisor, the School of Nursing inbox and often a hospital system's own student office. This page names each role the way Ohio University does, says what Ohio University publishes about it, and shows who to ask about what.

Ohio University publishes titles for many of these roles but duties for only a few. Where a title appears without a description, the tables below say so rather than guess, and the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook is the place to look for more. Names are left to Ohio University's own staff pages; this guide works by role.

These offices rarely touch your clinic days directly, yet each one can hold up a practicum if it is missed: registration, records, systems access, licensure and research support.

RN-to-BSN roles run differently
The RN-to-BSN moves its clinicals through different hands. You email your advisor for permission to take the clinical course, and the advisor adds you to the Pre-Clinical Canvas course, where your Preceptor Agreement is uploaded and approved before you may enroll. The site's education or human resources department tells you whether it needs an affiliation agreement, and a School of Nursing staff contact checks whether one already exists.
An archived 2023 affiliation agreement request form names a College of Health Sciences and Professions Office of Clinical Education, with a senior director acting as liaison between the School of Nursing and the facility. Current Ohio University pages do not list that office, and whether it handles graduate agreements is not stated.
People outside Ohio University
Some of the people who shape your placement work elsewhere. Hospital systems run their own student offices: Cleveland Clinic's Office of Advanced Practice Nursing contacts a student if a preceptor match is found, and Holzer's office sends the contact details of the preceptor it assigns. State boards of nursing matter wherever your clinic sits. Ohio University's disclosures note that Alaska requires students to apply for preceptorship with its board and that West Virginia's board approves out-of-state clinicals. Who to ask about what
- Finding or changing a placement, paperwork, the handbook: graduatenursing@ohio.edu.
- Whether a preceptor or site is acceptable: your course faculty.
- Hours, evaluations and site problems during the term: your clinical supervisor.
- Registration and your program of study: your School of Nursing academic advisor.
- Canvas, Catmail and OHIO ID problems: the IT Service Desk.
- Licensure rules in your state: the provost's disclosures and your state board.
- A hospital system's rotation application: that system's own student office.
The mistake is emailing a clinic or clinician inside a large system when the system asks students to use its central process. Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals both ask students not to call or email their individual sites or caregivers.
Where the placement desk fits
We add one more role to your side of the table: a placement advisor who knows each of the others. Your advisor runs the preceptor search, prepares what faculty review, tracks the packet and hospital deadlines, and tells you which Ohio University office to contact at each step.
That matters most when something changes mid-term. If a preceptor leaves, your advisor already knows who needs to hear first, what a replacement must include for faculty review, and which hospital window, if any, still applies.

Who approves my preceptor at Ohio University?
Faculty. The MSN FAQ says students may identify their preceptors "with faculty approval," and every nurse practitioner clinical runs with an approved preceptor. Who registers me for my Ohio University clinical course?
Your School of Nursing academic advisor registers graduate nursing students each semester according to their program of study. Dropping a graduate nursing course takes you off your planned sequence, and you would then need a new program of study, so speak with your advisor before changing anything on your schedule.
Who helps with Typhon or Canvas problems?
The IT Service Desk handles OHIO ID, Catmail, Canvas and many other services through help.ohio.edu. Ohio University's pages name no separate support contact for Typhon, so for questions about what to upload, follow the School of Nursing's instructions and write to graduatenursing@ohio.edu.
Does Ohio University have a clinical placement office for graduate nursing?
No dedicated graduate placement page exists on ohio.edu. The MSN FAQ names the Graduate Clinical Coordinator, the Knowledge Center routes placement and paperwork questions to graduatenursing@ohio.edu, and a CHSP Office of Clinical Education appears only on an archived RN-to-BSN form.
Who are the Program Track Directors?
Ohio University lists Program Track Directors for the FNP, AG-ACNP and PMHNP tracks on its graduate faculty and staff page, and the MSN application sends the one-way video interview to them. Their names are on that page; this guide refers to roles only.
