NRSE 6844: acute care as a team member
NRSE 6844 is the spring link in Ohio University's AG-ACNP chain. The catalog frames it around the acute care nurse practitioner "as an interdisciplinary healthcare team member," still working with acute and emergent complex conditions in adults and older adults. Six credits and 250 hours ride on it, NRSE 6843 is the requisite, and for spring 2027 its clinical packet is due 11/09/2026.

The spring 2027 clock is already running
Students in fall 2026 NRSE 6843 are in the middle of their first acute care course while the spring placement has to be settled. Ohio University's packet deadline for spring 2027 is 11/09/2026, and the facility windows it lists for spring close earlier: Holzer 8/31/2026, Cleveland Clinic 9/30/2026, Mount Carmel 10/31/2026 and OhioHealth 11/1/2026, all "subject to change at facilities discretion."

What changes from 6843
The clinical focus barely moves: the 6844 description keeps advanced assessment, diagnosis and management of acute and emergent complex conditions in adults and older adults. What moves is the role. Practicum I talks about providing comprehensive care; Practicum II places you "as an interdisciplinary healthcare team member in the acute care setting."
That points to units where the team is visible and you are part of it: multidisciplinary rounds on a hospital medicine service, a critical care team working alongside pharmacy, therapy and nursing, or an emergency unit coordinating admissions with inpatient services. A preceptor who includes you in handoffs, consults and family meetings gives this course its content. Each of the AG-ACNP settings the MSN FAQ names (intensive care, inpatient medicine and emergency departments) offers that kind of team.

For a cohort in its clinical year during 2026-27, the three practicums fall into a single academic year. Every date here comes from Ohio University's important dates page and tentative course offerings. Notice how the packet dates stack: the spring packet comes due in the middle of the fall course, and the summer packet in the middle of the spring one.

Each course runs once a year on the tentative table. A spring 6844 that slips does not reappear until the following spring, which is why the search for this course deserves the same lead time as the first. Carry-over checklist: from 6843, through 6844, into 6845
The middle course is the easiest to under-plan, because it arrives while you are busy with the first. Work through these before the spring term.
Before spring starts
- Decide with your faculty whether your 6843 preceptor and unit continue, and confirm the hospital's own paperwork for a new term.
- Have the approved preceptor and site for spring settled before 11/09/2026.
- Keep pre-clinical items current: immunizations, BLS, background checks and malpractice insurance, per the Graduate Nursing Student Handbook.
- Note what fall lacked: if 6843 was all critical care, a spring unit with more hospital medicine or emergency work broadens your range.
Looking ahead, 6844 feeds NRSE 6845, the summer course on advanced clinical judgment within an interdisciplinary team. Its catalog entry lists NRSE 6847 as the requisite, a PMHNP course, which reads as a listing error; our NRSE 6845 page explains that and the other quirks.
Intensives, repeats and the once-a-year pattern
The tentative course table does not flag NRSE 6844 for an on-campus intensive, and the important dates page lists none for it, so your spring weeks stay open for the unit. The rhythm to plan around is the one the MSN FAQ sets out for clinical courses: two or three days a week on site, with coursework on top.
Repeat rules deserve a line of their own for a spring-only course. The catalog's line is "May not be retaken"; the Knowledge Center's version permits a single repeat and treats a WF as a failed attempt. Either way, 6844 reappears only the following spring on the tentative table, so a repeat or a drop costs a year. Failing or repeating a clinical course has the details.

Questions Ohio University students ask
Is NRSE 6844 offered in summer?
Not on the Knowledge Center's tentative course offerings table, which lists 6844 in spring only. The AG-ACNP practicums each run once a year: 6843 in fall, 6844 in spring and 6845 in summer. Confirm your own term with your advisor, who registers you each semester according to your program of study.
Can my 6844 hours be split between two units?
Ohio University's public pages do not address splitting a practicum across sites. Every preceptor and site needs faculty approval, so a second unit works only if faculty approve it before you start there. Ask your course faculty early, and check the syllabus and the clinical overview sheets for 6844 before you set it up.
Do AG-ACNP students in Ohio face hospital-specific onboarding?
Often, and it is each system's own policy. Holzer, on its own pages, requires an active Clinical Education Affiliation Agreement and documents ten business days before starting, and Cleveland Clinic manages placement applications through ACEMAPP. Ohio University itself does not require affiliation agreements; a facility may. See affiliation agreements.
Do certificate students follow the same fall, spring, summer pattern?
Yes. The post-master's AG-ACNP certificate uses the same three practicums and lists fall as its only entry term in the catalog, so the once-a-year pattern applies. A gaps analysis of earlier coursework comes first and may add courses before clinicals. Ohio University's pages give three semesters, one year or two years as the certificate's length.
Who approves my 6844 preceptor?
Ohio University's MSN FAQ says students may identify their own preceptors with faculty approval, and that the Graduate Clinical Coordinator can help facilitate placements as an alternative.
